Seroquel Dosage-Let’s Have A Look!

Seroquel is an antipsychotic drug that soothes many depressive disorders. Seroquel helps in the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Pther major depressive disorders are also cured and treated by Seroquel. But, for the treatment of these problems with Seroquel, one must need to be extra conscious regarding it’s dosage. Seroquel dosage should be taken as per recommendations; and that can be either standard recommendation that you may found in the packing or it can be the recommendations of the doctor. The drug must not be taken more than the recommended dose.

Let’s have a look at what we have to have seroquel in regular doses as a patient.

For Schizophrenia:

For Adults: for adults, seroquel should be administered with the dose of 25mg and that is twice a day. It is to be noted that this dose is an initial dose. The dose can be increased from 25mg to 50mg. the increase should be gradual and it should be divided into two or three doses on the second and third day. If the patient’s body reactions remain good, then the patient can take dosage up to 300mg to 400mg per day and it can be done by fourth day. If any further increase in the dosage is required, or any kind of adjustment is required in this regard then it should be done with the intervals of two days. In case if any increase or decrease is required in the adjustment of the drug; both should be done with a rate of 25mg to 50mg per day. It is also observed that seroquel affects in the best ways when it is used thrice a day.

Moreover, it is also noticed that the drug proves itself to be effective for schizophrenia when taken in the dose range of 150mg per day to 750mg per day. Many studies  have also proven that the dose of 300mg per day is an effective dose and it’s efficacy can not be crossed by the dose that is above 300mg per day. Sometimes, the doses of 400mg per to 500mg per day had also been recommended in a few case studies on the dire need of the patient; keeping in mind patient’s all body reactions. All doses are checked and tested in clinical trials in order to have full knowledge regarding their safety and efficacy, but the doses of 800mg per day have still not been tested in clinical trials.

For Adolescents: for adolescents that are between 13 years to 17 years, the recommendation for seroquel dose is twice a day. If the body of the patient reacts normally, then this dose can be increased up to three times a day keeping all conditions in mind. There is five days therapy for the drug and that goes this way as follows:

  • For day one it is 50mg.
  • For day two, it is 100mg.
  • For day three, it is 200 mg.
  • For day four, it is 300 mg
  • For day five, it is 400mg.

After the completion of this five days therapy, the doses can be adjusted within the range of 400mg per day to 800mg per day. And that is again dependant upon the condition of the patient if he is able enough to tolerate this much quantity. The drug remains effective for the adolescents when given in the range of 400mg per day to 800mg per day. The doses above than this mentioned dosage do not have any additional efficacy.

FOR BIPOLAR DISORDER:

For Adults: for adults the dose is 100mg per day on the first day and that is in case of monotherapy or adjunct therapy. The dose can be increased up to 400mg per day and that is to be done on the fourth day. The increments that are required to be made are of 100mg per day and that is twice on daily basis. Clinical studies have shown that the patient’s have responded the best for the doses of around 400mg per day to 800mg per day.  Again for bipolar disorder like schizophrenia, the clinical trials have not been conducted for the dosages above 800mg per day.

For children: for children of age between ten years to seventeen years, the dose of seroquel can be given twice a day. And if the condition of the patient shows then the dosage can be increased to thrice a day. This drug remains effective for the dosage of 400mg to 600mg per day.

One needs to be careful regarding Seroquel dosage. It should be taken as per doctor’s recommendation. If the patient feels that he is quite well and can tolerate extra dosage, even then the patient must ask for the doctor’s prescription and advice. Self medication is a must and big NO for seroquel dosage. A guide is required in order to have right seroquel dosage at right time and that guide is your trusted doctor.
